Dr. Craniv Boyd, PhD

Author & Lecturer

Craniv Boyd, PhD, studied African Art History in Berlin. He was awarded the prestigious Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Doctoral Fellowship for Tradition-Based African Arts. In 2017, he completed his MA thesis on “Ndebele Mural Art and the Commodification of Ethnic Style” at Freie Universität Berlin. In 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation titled “The Beadwork and Murals of Becoming: Ndebele Identity Bricoleurs and Their Assemblages of Belonging”, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tobias Wendl from Freie Universität Berlin and PD Dr. Paola Margherita Ivanov, Curator of East, Northeast, Central, and South African Collections at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin. His first monograph, Assemblages of Belonging: Murals, Beadwork, and Ndebele Identity in South Africa, was published with transcript Verlag.
